Thyroid Screening
Thyroid disease is estimated to affect 27 million Americans, with more
than half undiagnosed. The thyroid is a small bow tie shaped gland
located in the neck that produces several hormones. These hormones
help oxygen get into cells. It is the "master" of the metabolism. Thyroid
hormones stimulate processes throughout the body.  During a thyroid
ultrasound screening, we can screen for cysts on the thyroid and
indicate the size of the thyroid. Routine blood work only indicates
hormone levels.

Facts:
  • Thirty million Americans have some growth or nodule on the thyroid gland
  • Strikes just as many people as cervical & liver cancer
  • 3,000,000 people are suspected of having thyroid cancer
  • Often goes undetected because people do not experience any symptoms
  • 10 - 15 million Americans have nodules that may be a sign of a thyroid disorder

Risk Factors:
  • Radiation exposure
  • Family history
  • Being female
  • Not enough iodine in the diet

Reference
Experts estimate that as many as 13 million Americans have a thyroid problem, but up to 8
million may go undiagnosed. Ultrasound screenings can detect abnormal size, cysts, and
nodules that could indicate a health problem.
