Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm Screening
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a bulging of the abdominal aorta,
which carries blood from the heart throughout the body. AAA ranks 13th
as the cause in all deaths of Americans.  Yet, if detected before they
rupture, 95% are preventable.  AAA's generally have no symptoms
before they rupture, making ultrasound a great option for screening.

Facts:
  • The mortality rate from a ruptured AAA is 90-95%
  • Research indicates that as many as 8 out of every 100 people over the age of 60
    have an undetected aneurysm
  • The vast majority of people who have an aneurysm have no symptoms

Risk Factors:
  • Being a male older than 55 years of age
  • Having an immediate relative, such as a mother or brother who has had AAA
  • Having high blood pressure
  • Smoking

Symptoms:
  • AAA's most often present without symptoms
  • Back pain
  • Rigidity of the abdomen
Reference
Preventative ultrasound screenings for abdominal aortic aneurysms have been found to be
beneficial by the United States preventative Task Force. The task force " found good evidence
that screening foe AAA and surgical repair of large AAA's in men aged 65-75 who have ever
smoked (current and former smokers ) leads to decreased mortality. "
